Who am I?

First off I’ll start with the project I did.

I first took a photo of myself cut it in half and then drew the rest. The photo represents who I am to others. While the drawn side represents who I see myself as, my own interpretation rather.

For the background I decided to make it composed of different terms or words that people describe me as. I asked old friends, co-workers, people I knew only online, family, etc. Their responses varied from person to person.

I tried to apply most of the questions to my project.

  1. Who are you in the eyes/perception of others? I addressed this by asking people what they thought of me. (see above)
  2. How do you see/perceive yourself? I addressed this by drawing myself and adding my own words to the background. (See above). Interestingly a lot of the words that I thought about myself were addressed by other people. But some of the more personal stuff obviously couldn’t be perceived by others.
  3. Why are you here? I am here to be who I am….Just kidding. I am “here” as an artist, as a student, and as a person to learn and explore.
  4. What are the implications of your identity to others? One major thing I noticed is that individuals viewed me as a certain thing, or pegholed me into one “role”. That role is an artist. I found that a lot of people come into contact with me because of my digital identity or presence as an artist. Also it is interesting to note that people pegholed my style as well and identified me because of it.
  5. How are you effected by the identity of others? (are you different around various people – why might that be) I think that I am influenced by other people just being around.. Mainly this is due to the fact that society dictates us to act a certain way. When I am speaking or doing interviews as a Press member for SPJA, I have to act more courageous than my usual introverted self. Different personas for different situations.
  6. Is identity static? (make sure to show in your project your answer to this) Definitely not, Identity can change all the time depending on situation or passage of time, and my own personal timeline represented by the background shows that. People’s views of me changed throughout time and they varied as well.
